IMDB
The sequel to Japón is a big-city story of demise in mega-city Mexico about a fat driver, the beautiful daughter of his boss and the surprising confession of an unforgivable crime. Upsetting and exciting existential drama by one of the world's greatest film talents.
Batalla en el cielo aka Battle in Heaven (2005) is unilaterally praised by critics so I guess it must be great, as far as art flicks go. I like arthouse movies, too, but nowadays I never watch anything about fucked-up people. I mean, it's depressing enough to see dealers, junkies, crack whores, crazies, weirdos, motherfucking sickos and whatnot almost every day in my life. I don't need to watch a movie about a fat guy who has problems and then takes it out on a prostitute by stabbing her.
Yeah, yeah, I know this movie is about social issues in Mexico which some may find fascinating but there is enough of that shit in the part of town where I live so I really don't need any more of it.
On the other hand, I watched Silent Light by the same director (Carlos Reygadas) and was enthralled by it. A truly profound movie about love.
