We do, however, get a few good shots of her bare butt. Shu Qi did something like this and did it a lot better: she was totally naked most of the time in Shu Qi: True Woman. Samsara tells the story of a young lama who has to face one of the greatest causes of troubles in the world: sexual awakening. Ritual, eroticism, poetry and snobbery are the cornerstones of the 10th-century Japanese text that inspires Peter Greenaway's rapturously perverse new film. Since these are also essential aspects of Greenaway's own work, the match is phenomenally apt.

"The Pillow Book" finds the filmmaker at his most atypically seductive, creating a spellbinding web of cruel elegance and intricate gamesmanship, exploring the exotic, haunting beauty of the bizarre.

This film's stylish surface makes it significantly more palatable than the other, chillier cinematic exercises (among them "Drowning By Numbers" and "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover") for which Greenaway is known.

Fetishism intact, he turns his sophisticated attention to what Sei Shonagon, the Heian courtesan whose haunting, eloquent journal entries form the thousand-year-old Japanese classic known as "The Pillow Book," called "the delights of flesh and literature." As she put it, "I have had the good fortune to enjoy them both equally." The film, in its far kinkier fashion, means to do the same.

Greenaway's "Pillow Book" is no antique: set essentially in the present, it centers on a young woman (Vivian Wu) in the grip of a peculiar erotic obsession. Nagiko, the film's heroine (and the probable real name of Sei Shonagon), is the daughter of a calligrapher who lovingly painted words and characters on her skin during her childhood. And when she grows up to become a fashion model, she needs to recapture this experience.

The film, which derives more sensuality from delicate brush strokes than many others find in conventional sex scenes, embroils Nagiko in a revenge scheme against an exploitative publisher while she tries to find a calligrapher-lover who can gratify her desires. (Read the full review here)

Christian converters the world over should take a lesson from Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book, for what better way to bring the Word of God to people than painting it on a young woman's naked body? I sure as heck was enlightened, real hard.

Since this movie is about Literature on Flesh, there are lots of full-frontal nudity, male and femal alike. That means we get to see Obi Wan McGregor's mighty love saber. I left out other male nude scenes, though.

Loosely based on the erotic Chinese tale The Carnal Prayer Mat (published in 1634), this Hong Kong production is one of the most witty and enjoyable films to emerge from that country. It is a work of full blown erotica, something that is relatively rare in mainstream cinema. This is not cheap, badly lit video footage shot in someone’s bedroom from three angles at once – this film has top production values and is gorgeously lit. It even has a story.


Some of the sequences on display are breathtaking in their eroticism – like the sequence where a woman places morsels of food inside herself and masturbates the hero with a loaf of bread; or that of the hero’s wife painting Chinese characters using a paintbrush placed inside her vagina; and in one extraordinary sequence two women pleasing themselves together, humping buttock to buttock using a flute placed in their mutual vaginas.


And moreover the film has the courage to balance its erotica out with humour. This all comes in the frothy, dizzy style characteristic of Hong Kong cinema. The penis transplant sequence is an hilarious comedy of mishaps – the difficulties in knocking the donkey out in time, the doctor accidentally anaethetizing his own hands, a storm coming that turns the doctor into a maniac, the severed donkey’s penis being sent flying and impaling itself in the servant’s mouth, the dog eating the hero’s penis after it has been removed. The film with its free and light-hearted attitude has a lack of self-consciousness in its erotica that easily puts the guilt-ridden sensationalism of American contemporaries such as Basic Instinct (1992) and Color of Night (1994) to shame. The film does lecture the hero about the Buddhist cycle of karma at the end for his selfish ways, but the tone here is clearly unserious.


There was a sequel Sex & Zen II (1996) but this fairly much abandoned connection to this film, becoming a much more overtly fantastical film with characters facing demonic sex-changing chameleons. This was followed by a further unrelated entry Sex and Zen III (1998), which contains no fantasy elements and is regarded as the weakest of the series.

The original Sex and Zen is, imho, simply the best Chinese erotic movie ever made. It looks gorgeous; the lead actresses are eye-candy, especially Amy Yip; it has a humorous story and it contains many scenes of great eroticism. But of course I have just repeated everything that was said in the above review :)

The reason I have waited for so long before putting up this clip is because it was so damn hard to find a good copy of the film. Thanks to UncleMeat on KG, I finally got a beautiful rip that does the film justice.

If and when I have time, I am going to upload the whole movie. But it's not today.

Summer Palace is one of the first films from mainland China to display full-frontal adult male and female nudity.

The film deals with young student played by Hao Lei who leaves her small hometown to study at the fictional "Beiqing University" (an homage to Peking University). There she meets a fellow student and begins an intense romantic relationship in the backdrop of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The film also follows the eventual disillusionment of these young idealists after the crackdown, as the years progress through the 1990s and into the 2000s. The film is named after the Summer Palace located in Beijing.

Summer Palace's explicit sex scenes and political undertones made the film a touchstone for controversy in China, leading both the director, Lou Ye, and his producers into conflict with China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT). After screening Summer Palace in the 2006 Cannes Film Festival without government approval, the film was de facto banned in Mainland China, and its filmmakers officially censured. Wikipedia

Given the amount of nudity and sex, plus the political subtext, it came as no surprise to anyone that this movie was banned in China, it also got the filmmakers banned from making movies for a few years (some sources say 5, some say 2 years).

Also, according to this article, "China said that they will cut all diplomatic ties with any country that plays the movie, and requested that all the tapes be confiscated and handed over to them." OK, I must have a weird sense of humor because I am freakin' laughing my ass of. By the way, this isn't the first time director Lou Ye ran afoul of Chinese censors either. His his 2000 film 'Suzhou River' still remains banned in China.

Anyway, the sex scenes are quite dark, so you may want to tinker with your video player's settings to set it a bit brighter.

I think any movie lover out there should check Summer Palace out, if only to piss them Chinese commies off :)
