Samsara tells the story of a young lama who has to face one of the greatest causes of troubles in the world: sexual awakening. Ao Lua Ha Dong aka The White Silk Dress should be marked down as a historical moment in Vietnamese cinema. Can you say you have seen tits in a Vietnamese-produced movie before?
Well, technically, a dozen years or so ago, there was a film about a painter in which a young model was naked, but the nudity was very brief and it wasn't even a good movie. It created quite a controversy, though, seeing as the model-cum-actress was underage at the time and allegedly the filmmakers didn't get the parents' consent.

But I digress.

Not only Ao Lua Ha Dong is a great cinematic achievement (truly noteworthy Vietnamese movies are only made every once in a blue moon) it also contains some serious nudity (serious for a film made in Vietnam anyway). In a country where every movie is censored before being shown on TV or in theaters, the fact that we see boobies in this film, albeit very briefly, is a pretty amazing phenomenon.

How did the filmmakers achieve that? There can only one possible explanation: bribery. I am sure the Vietnamese censors and the officials fill their pockets with the filmmakers' money. The good thing about living in an under-developing country with a corrupted government like Vietnam is that anything can be bought. It ain't so good if you're piss-poor, though.

Anyway, about the nudity: war times. A poorer-than-poor, young, breastfeeding woman is forced to sell her milk to a filthy rich old perv. We get to see the milk being squeezed out of her full breasts. Later, not content to drink milk out of a bowl, the old man wants to suck it straight from the source and so we get to see the lovely young mother breast-feed the geezer, through a hole. Maybe money can't buy happiness but it sure as hell can buy you breast milk. Call me a sick pervert but goddamn if I didn't have an epic hard-on watching those scenes. But before you pervs get your hopes up too high, let me remind you that the nudity is very brief.

There is also a steamy sex scene, beautifully filmed where any nudity is, sadly, artfully obscured. The Vietnamese commies are very uptight about tits on screen, and money can only buy you so much slack.

Nudity aside, Ao Lua Ha Dong is a must-see for any serious movie lover out there. Production values, acting, story, characters and cinematography are all great. Besides, it's not like you see a good Vietnamese movie every day.

The movie delivers pretty much what one expects: raunchy humor. Lots of T&A and sex. Don't expect anything else and you won't be disappointed.

Worth noting is Christine Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American model with a cute face and a great body. I hope those boobs are real (fat chance of that). Anyway, I will look for other movies in which she is nude.

According to the person who wrote the IMDB plot summary, this is very real.

This exploration of power, trust and captivity were inspired by the prevalence of more-or-less consensual slave/master related lifestyles as well as the existence of global systemic servitude that allows for cheap labor, sex slaves, organ sales etc. There are 11 companies in the US and the UK that makes human pet cages, human auctions where the purchaser can completes the transaction through "Pay Pal", can be found throughout the Internet and slave marking listings such as branding, piercing, tagging and what insiders refer to as TPE [Total Power Exchange] for consensual slaves number in the thousands on the Internet. But I am straying from the subject. Despite the amount of nudity and the BDSM lifestyle portrayed in the movie, it isn't at all exploitative but a serious, albeit not so good movie.

Also, it's worth mentioning for having Vietnamese-American actress Sommer Nguyen naked onscreen. I mean, when was the last time you saw a nude Vietnamese actress in a movie? Vietnam is a country where prostitutes and brothels are everywhere but porno materials are strictly forbidden by the government. There, hypocrisy and corruption within the government are as high as the level of toxic substances in a crack-whore's body. And yeah, I know what I am talking about.
