Excerpt from review at The New York Times:
L'Ennui is not the first French film to explore the excruciating erotic attachment we call possessiveness. (What would the French cinema be, after all, without its crimes of passion?) But as it follows an arrogant philosophy teacher's descent into sexual obsession, this devastating film goes as far as a movie ever has in exploring the kind of eroticized panic that can explode into violence.
...
The purely carnal nature of the arrangement is evident from the film's explicit, unromantic sex scenes in which there's hardly any kissing, caressing or endearments, only the brute act executed roughly and perfunctorily, which apparently is the way Cécilia likes it. Shortly after their affair has begun, Martin boasts about it to his ex-wife, Sophie (Arielle Dombasle), remarking at how boring and stupid his new lover is. But when Cécilia doesn't show up for their appointment that afternoon, he becomes frantic with frustration and growing jealousy.
I am not a stranger to sexual obsession and possessiveness so I am always interested in movies about those subjects, like L'ennui. My all time favorite has to be Bad Timing. But L'ennui is so damn boring, I tried hard to like the movie but it just didn't click.
However, Sophie Guillemin's nakedness saved me from total boredom. I don't mind women with a few extra pounds. I find them sexy, even. With a pair like that and a little inventiveness, a man can go a long way toward happiness.
