Dark Country (2008)

Thomas Jane, one of the Punishers, also the star of Thursday, made his directorial debut with Dark Country, a minimalist, low-budget but very effective and atmospheric thriller.

Like Theresa Russel in Hotel Paradise, our Thomas Jane wakes up one morning with a hangover and a...newly-wedded wife he doesn't remember marrying. Convinced that he loves her, they set our for a romantic night ride across the desert. Turns out his wife has a thing for speeding cars. Hence, we get a great masturbation scene by Lauren German, during which no nudity is shown but it still is very nice and erotic. It also immediately reminds me of Kim Basinger and her ice cube in 9 and 1/2 weeks.

Even though Thomas Jane hasn't starred in many recommendable movies, I have always found him to be an excellent actor. Turns out he is an even better director. If you are in the mood for a good little thriller with great acting and excellent atmosphere, Dark Country is the perfect fix for you. In any event, I like it much better than the recent Long Weekend (2008).
