Have you ever had a fantasy about having sex with a beautiful woman, while she is completely knocked out? Then in the morning you leave and she wakes up knowing nothing about what happened. No harm done. No strings attached. And you return to her home and do it night after night? Well, I often have such fantasy. I just never knew there was a Japanese movie about it. And it is a damn good movie, too.

It's called A pool without water but I think it should be called The Gentleman Rapist. It's about this married man who is fed up with his annoying wife and bratty children so he finds himself a hobby: chloroforming women so he can spend the night with them. Women are at their best when unconscious: they don't talk, you don't have to ask them "Did you come?", there is no need for pretense cuddling afterward and best of all they won't bitch if you light a cig. So, our hero gases many a woman and has many a wonderful night. But one of them in particular he returns to often. A beautiful waitress, played by Reiko Nakamura. The man likes her so much he cleans her house and washes her underwear and prepares her breakfast before disappearing at sunrise like a benevolent, pervert spirit. How nice and considerate of him. I would be such a gentleman, too, if only I knew where to get some chloroform. My favorite scene: the waitress is awake but faints unconsciousness, which is not easy when a man is making love to you. The camera focuses mainly on her face in the scene and through her facial expressions we can imagine what is happening, how she is feeling and how hard she is struggling to maintain her pretense. No wonder Reiko Nakamura won an award for Best New Actress. Too bad she didn't star in many movies after this one. Probably married a filthy rich old geezer.

Despite the subject, the movie is actually a romance, and a good one at that, at times very funny.

Lots of nudity and simulated sex here. All of it very erotic. They don't make them like this anymore.
